  AS JANUARY goes, so goes the year. If that popular trading rule on Wall Street is any guide, then the fact that US equities recorded their worst January in recent history is a bad omen for 2009. After all, over the past 50 years, 70% of the time the US market has followed the same path from February through December as it has taken in January.
